Anxiety
Anxiety disorders involve more than ordinary worry. They can include persistent fear or worry, difficulty controlling anxious thoughts, restlessness, irritability, physical tension, sleep problems and difficulty concentrating. The situations that increase anxiety, and the supports that feel helpful, differ considerably from person to person.
What it can mean day to day
Assistive technology is not a treatment for an anxiety disorder, but it can remove practical barriers that intensify stress. Predictable visual information, easier ways to communicate needs, reduced sensory load and access to a chosen quiet space can support participation alongside appropriate psychological or medical care.
Where assistive technology can help
Challenge 1
Uncertainty about what will happen next can increase cognitive load and worry
Challenge 2
Expressing a need for help, a break or more information may be harder during high anxiety
Challenge 3
Noise, crowds and other environmental demands can make concentration and participation more difficult for some people
Anxiety: what typically works
Predictability and visual sequencing
Make routines, waiting periods and multi-step activities visible so the person does not have to rely only on verbal reassurance or memory.
Low-demand communication options
Provide simple ways to indicate choices, ask for clarification, request a pause or communicate needs when speaking feels difficult.
Optional low-stimulation space
A quieter, more controllable environment can provide a temporary place to regulate when the person chooses it; it should support participation, not become avoidance by default.
Personal control over the environment
Where possible, let the user control lighting, sound, pace and other inputs. Choice and predictability can reduce unnecessary environmental stress.
